Alice in Wonderland – First Female to Win a Formula Renault Race in UK

Leading British female motor sport driver Alice Powell today won the 4th round of the Formula Renault BARC Championship at Silverstone, becoming the first female to win a Formula Renault race in the UK.

Alice took the checkered flag a massive seven seconds ahead of the field for her second podium of the Championship, having finished second in the 3rd round of the season earlier in the day.

Alice says: “It has been a fantastic start to the season – the win is a credit for all the hard work put in by my team Hillspeed and engineer Sarah Shaw from Manor Competition. Qualifying was great with second on the grid for round 3 and pole position for round 4.”

“My aim this season is to win the Championship and realise my ambition to become the first successful female in Formula 1.”

Formula Renault BARC Championship consists of 12 rounds at 6 race meetings throughout 2010.

Alice and her engineer, Sarah Shaw, are a formidable female double team. Sarah is co-owner of Manor Competition and is highly respected throughout national single-seater racing. Shaw has a superb record of success in Formula Renault BARC having previously engineered Hywel Lloyd and Richard Singleton to championship glory. She also took Dean Smith to the 2009 Formula Renault UK title.

In 2010 Alice is competing in two championships: Formula Renault BARC Championship and the Ginetta G50 Cup. The next round of Formula Renault BARC is at Croft on the 3rd and 4th July.

Alice recently won the prestigious British Women Racing Drivers Club (BWRDC) Gold Star Elite Award 2010.
