Alice takes first Podium in Formula Renault UK and first of the season for Manor

Alice Powell is currently leading the Graduate Cup Championship in the 2011 Formula Renault UK series with Manor Competition – the most successful team in the history of the Championship.

Alice had mixed fortunes at Donington Park for rounds 3 and 4 of the FRUK series last weekend. In the first qualifying session, Alice finished in 9th position after making a small error on her final flying lap. In the second qualifying of the weekend, Alice was the highest placed Manor Competition driver and started race two from 4th on the grid and as the top series Graduate.

In race one Alice was hit coming into the first corner, which bumped her down a position at the start of lap one. After running wide at the last chicane, she then dropped down to last position, but fought her way back through the pack to finish in 9th place at the chequered flag.

In race two, Alice did not get the best of starts, dropping down to 6th, but she had reclaimed a place by the end of the first lap. She remained in 5th position for the rest of the race. However, following a post-race enquiry, the two Fortec cars were excluded on a technical infringement, so Alice was promoted to 3rd place and a podium finish, also winning the weekend’s Graduate Cup!

Alice is currently running P6 in the 2011 Formula Renault UK series and leading the Graduate Cup Championship.

Sarah Shaw at Manor Competition: “Alice did a great job in Q2 to qualify fourth. The track had gripped up a lot between the two sessions and this caught several drivers out – but Alice adapted really well and got the best out of her tyres. In the race she recovered from a less than perfect start which saw her drop two places; however she very quickly re-took one of those places from her more experienced team mate and initially looked like she was going to retake the other. In the end she found herself embroiled in a race long battle with Ollie Millroy who tried hard to retake 5th place from Alice, but she kept her head and kept him at bay to record her best finish so far.”

Alice is now concentrating on the next race weekend which takes place at Thruxton on the 30th April and 1st May.
